Fort Myers school ratings and districts start with one district. The School District of Lee County runs the traditional public schools in the city and the nearby unincorporated communities. Assignment uses choice zones, so check each address.

Which school district serves Fort Myers?

The School District of Lee County serves all of Fort Myers and the rest of Lee County. That includes Fort Myers addresses outside the city, such as San Carlos Park and Gateway. For 2025-2026, the Florida Department of Education gave the district a grade of "B". The district reported this in July 2026.

How are students assigned to schools in Fort Myers?

Elementary and middle schools use a Proximity Plan. Parents rank the schools in their proximity zone. Seats are filled using preferences such as siblings and distance. High school uses three large choice zones: West, East and South. Each is split into sub-zones.

Registration for the next school year opens the first Monday in November. It runs through the district's FOCUS parent portal. Applying on the first day does not give an advantage. Placements are made after the window closes.

What choice, magnet and charter options exist?

The district offers magnet and advanced programs such as International Baccalaureate, Cambridge, FGCU Collegiate and the arts. Each has its own application. Charter schools in Lee County are publicly funded but privately run. Each has its own governing board and runs its own application process.

Florida Gulf Coast University and Florida SouthWestern State College are both in the Fort Myers area.
