Which taxing units are on a Dallas tax bill?
A typical bill for a home in the City of Dallas and Dallas ISD has five lines. For tax year 2025, the Dallas County Tax Office lists these rates per $100 of value: Dallas ISD $0.993835, City of Dallas $0.6988, Dallas County $0.2155, Parkland Hospital $0.212 and Dallas College $0.106575.
That adds up to about $2.23 per $100 before exemptions. For 2026, the City Council approved a city rate of $0.6978. Homes in other school districts, or in the Collin, Denton, Kaufman or Rockwall county parts of Dallas, have different lines.
How does the homestead exemption work in Dallas?
The residence homestead exemption lowers the taxable value of the home you own and live in. School districts must exempt $140,000 of a homestead's value. Owners who are 65 or older, or disabled, get an additional $60,000 school exemption.
Any taxing unit may also adopt a local option exemption of up to 20% of the value. File with the Dallas Central Appraisal District, or the Collin or Denton appraisal district if your home is there. The general deadline is before May 1, and filing is free.
How much can my appraised value rise each year?
Once you have a homestead exemption, Texas limits the yearly increase in the homestead's appraised value to 10%, plus the value of new improvements. The cap starts after the exemption is in place.
A sale often resets the picture, because the seller's exemptions end at closing. Budget taxes on your purchase price, not on last year's bill.
How do I protest my Dallas appraisal?
Each spring the appraisal district mails value notices. You can protest by May 15 or within 30 days after the notice is mailed, whichever is later.

What are PIDs and MUDs, and do they apply in Dallas?
Public improvement districts (PIDs) add an assessment, and municipal utility districts (MUDs) add a tax rate. In Dallas you are most likely to meet a PID in dense, mixed-use areas; Uptown, for example, is itself a public improvement district.
Texas Water Code Section 49.452 requires a seller to give written notice when a property is in one of these districts. TREC publishes a form for it. Read it before you sign, and add the amount to your budget.
