The pros and cons of moving to Denton, TX reflect a county seat with two universities and a lot of new growth. Denton offers a historic downtown, rail to DART and large natural areas, along with property taxes, construction and storm season. Here is a balanced look.

Pro: a historic courthouse square

The 1896 courthouse anchors a downtown with shops, music venues and a county history museum. The Courthouse Square Historic District is on the National Register.

Pro: rail service to the DART network

DCTA's A-train runs 21 miles from downtown Denton to Trinity Mills in Carrollton, where riders transfer to DART. Trains run every 30 minutes on weekdays and hourly on Saturdays. Rides between the Downtown Denton Transit Center and MedPark are free.

Pro: large parks and lakes nearby

Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center opens onto more than 2,900 acres of bottomland forest and prairie. North Lakes Park covers 351 acres, and Ray Roberts Lake State Park surrounds a 29,000-acre lake north of town.

Pro: university events and resources

The University of North Texas enrolls nearly 44,000 students and Texas Woman's University more than 16,000. They bring concerts, sports and lectures to town.

Pro: new-home options on the way

Where Denton Municipal Electric serves the address, the City Council sets rates and you generally cannot shop retail plans. Some buyers like the stability; others prefer choice.

Con: storms, heat and freezes

April and May are the busiest tornado months in North Texas, summers often reach 100 degrees, and hard freezes happen. Denton runs 22 outdoor warning sirens; budget for insurance with a clear hail deductible.
