The pros and cons of moving to Flower Mound, TX come down to location and land use. The town offers parks, two nearby lakes and quick airport access, along with flight corridors, car-dependent errands and septic systems on the west side. Here is a balanced look.

Pro: parks, trails and two lakes

The town counts nearly 1,000 acres of parkland and more than 60 miles of trails. Twin Coves Park on Grapevine Lake has cabins, a boat ramp and a kayak launch, and Lewisville Lake lies to the east.

Pro: close to DFW Airport

Flower Mound sits about three miles north of DFW International Airport, according to the Town. It is also about 10 miles from Alliance Airport.

Pro: growth guided by a plan

The town's SMARTGrowth program weighs 29 criteria, including infrastructure, school capacity and environment, before new development moves ahead. The result is mostly single-family neighborhoods and conservation areas.

Pro: room to spread out on the west side

Texas has no personal income tax, and the Town offers a homestead exemption of 20% of value or $5,000, whichever is greater.

Con: flight corridors over parts of town

Con: a car for almost everything

Flower Mound is not a DCTA member, so there is no bus or rail in town. Traffic concentrates on the main farm-to-market roads, especially FM 2499, so time your commute at rush hour.

Con: septic systems on the west side

The Master Plan does not provide sewer service in the Cross Timbers district, so most homes there use septic. Budget for inspections and maintenance, and ask for records before you buy.

Con: property taxes still add up
