Which taxing units are on a Lewisville tax bill?
Most Lewisville homes pay the City of Lewisville, Denton County and Lewisville ISD, plus any special district. A small part of the city lies in Dallas County. There, Dallas County rates and the Dallas Central Appraisal District apply instead of Denton's.
The Denton Central Appraisal District sets your home's value each year. Each taxing unit then sets its own rate per $100 of taxable value.
What are the current Lewisville tax rates?
These adopted rates are per $100 of value for fiscal 2025-26 (tax year 2025):
City of Lewisville: $0.419009. Denton County: $0.185938. Lewisville ISD: $1.117800.
Taxing units reset rates every fall. Confirm the current-year rates on the Denton Central Appraisal District record for the address. On a typical Lewisville bill, the city says about 65% goes to the school district. About 24% goes to the city and 11% to the county.
How does the homestead exemption work?
If you own and live in the home, file for a homestead exemption. It lowers the taxable value of your main home. School districts must exempt $140,000 of a homestead's value. Owners 65 or older or disabled get an extra $60,000 school exemption. Other taxing units may offer a local exemption of up to 20% of value.
The general filing deadline is before May 1. If you buy after January 1, you can get the exemption for the part of the year after you qualify. This works as long as the seller did not already claim it.
Is there a cap on how fast my taxes can rise?
Once your homestead qualifies, its appraised value cannot rise more than 10% a year. The cap starts on January 1 of the tax year after you qualify. A short-term 20% circuit breaker limit covers some non-homestead property valued at $5,320,000 or less.
How do I protest my appraised value?
You can protest by May 15 or within 30 days after the appraisal district mails your notice, whichever is later. Bring sales of similar homes. Bring photos of any needed repairs.
What do PIDs and special districts add?
Parts of Castle Hills are in a Lewisville Castle Hills public improvement district. It bills a yearly assessment on top of regular taxes. Texas requires the seller to give you a written notice when a home is in a special tax or assessment district.
Ask for last year's full tax bill and the assessment payoff amount. Then plug the combined rate into the mortgage calculator and compare Lewisville's cost of living.
