Sanibel is a city, so your bill includes city millage along with Lee County, school and district levies. It also includes the solid waste assessment. The city is weighing a possible stormwater assessment in its fiscal year 2027 budget process. None had been adopted when this page was written.

What should I budget for insurance on Sanibel?

Flood and wind insurance usually drive the budget here. FEMA maps on the island include AE, AO, VE and X zones. NFIP residential limits are $250,000 for the building and $100,000 for contents. So many gulf-front owners add excess coverage.

New flood policies usually take effect after a 30-day wait. Wind coverage is separate. Ask how roof age, windows and the year it was built affect the quote.

Which utilities will I pay on Sanibel?

Island Water Association, a member-owned utility, supplies water on Sanibel and Captiva. The City of Sanibel handles sewer billing and hookups. LCEC provides electricity.

WM collects trash under a city contract. You pay for it through the solid waste assessment on your tax bill.

What does getting on and off Sanibel cost?

The causeway toll is $6.00 for a two-axle vehicle with a transponder. It is collected only on the way onto the island. Without a transponder, pay-by-plate adds a $3 administrative fee. A LeeWay prepaid account comes with a free transponder and off-peak discounts.

Resident beach parking permits cost $14 for 2025. The 2026 permits go on sale October 6, 2026. On the island, more than 26 miles of shared use paths make biking handy for errands.

What are sales tax and income tax on Sanibel?

Florida's general sales tax rate is 6%. Lee County adds a 0.5% surtax that runs through December 31, 2028. Most taxable purchases carry 6.5%.

Florida's constitution bars a state tax on the income of natural persons beyond the federal credit, so there is no state personal income tax.
